Comparative Cookie Anatomy / Infographical Eye Candy
The “parametric” poster format begins with a set of recipes a chef intends to compare, turns into a spreadsheet as they work out the relative ingredient percentages, and then wends its way through a layout process. The data reveals what the important differences between the recipes.
In 2019 I did the first of these, for Chocolate Chip Cookies. The visual reference concept that Chef Grant Crilly brought for design was similar to other charts he’d worked on at Modernist Cuisine, but ours performed another task: Marketing. The chefs baked other famous recipes, and we tagged them all in our articles and posts about this cookie comparison.
I spent a lot of time on the initial project creating an application with Processing to generate bar charts inside the spreadsheet, writing the copy and doing the photoshop and InDesign production. Later versions were written by the writers of the accompanying article.
